Setting New Industry Benchmarks! FAW Jiefang Makes Major Breakthroughs in Three Core Dimensions of Fuel Cell Stacks
Recently, the new-generation fuel cell stack independently developed by FAW Jiefang has obtained authoritative third-party certification from CATARC New Energy Vehicle Test Center (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. Breakthroughs have been realized in three key indicators: volumetric power density, -40℃ unaided cold start and hydrogen utilization rate. Its overall performance reaches the leading level of the industry.![]()
Volumetric Power Density of 9.5 kW/L: Benchmark for Miniaturized Stacks
With multiple technological innovations including metal rib sealing, Venturi variable-flow flow field and asymmetric manifold ports, the R&D team pushed the peak volumetric power density of the stack to 9.5 kW/L (average voltage: 0.6 V), while its rated volumetric power density exceeds 8 kW/L (average voltage: 0.65 V), setting a new industry performance record.
The compact stack features strong platform adaptability, supporting installation for both commercial and passenger vehicles, and lays a solid foundation for optimized vehicle layout design.
Unaided Rapid Cold Start at -40℃: Breaking Bottlenecks for Frigid-climate Application
To address common industry pain points of slow startup and unstable operation for hydrogen vehicles in cold regions, the stack adopts a low-heat-capacity structure plus deeply optimized low-temperature control strategy.
It can achieve fast cold start at -40℃ without auxiliary heating, reaching stable rated power output within 180 seconds. This technology effectively solves the difficulty of startup and operational limits under low-temperature conditions, guaranteeing vehicle attendance in frigid environments.![]()
Ultra-high Hydrogen Utilization of 99.9% for Efficient Vehicle Operation
The team reconstructed the multi-stage anode distribution flow field and optimized the matching of catalyst layer and carbon paper for membrane electrodes, greatly improving the electrochemical reaction efficiency under low hydrogen concentration. The stack can run stably under 60% hydrogen concentration, significantly reducing hydrogen exhaust loss from the anode. Its hydrogen utilization rate hits 99.9%, helping cut hydrogen consumption of complete vehicles and improve operational economy.
The successful third-party certification of this new-generation fuel cell stack marks an important milestone for FAW Jiefang’s independent R&D of core hydrogen energy technologies.
Moving forward, FAW Jiefang will keep exploring key fuel cell technologies, promote collaborative innovation with upstream and downstream industrial partners, accelerate the transformation from technical achievements to mass-produced products, continuously improve the industrial ecosystem of hydrogen-powered vehicles, and inject strong momentum into the high-quality development of China’s hydrogen energy industry.
